Toxicology Services

Key Forensic Services offer an in-depth toxicology service. Our team of forensic toxicologists are experienced in the analysis, interpretation and reporting of a wide range of criminal and medico-legal investigations.

Full analytical toxicology testing and assessment using state-of-the-art equipment

Our team of toxicologists have extensive experience in the study of the adverse effects of drugs and chemicals on living organisms.

By using state-of-the-art equipment in our own forensic laboratories, our toxicology experts can provide full analytical testing and assessment, culminating in tailored reports to suit customers’ requirements suitable for court presentation, as well as providing expert witness court testimony.
Our forensic investigations can lead us to, among other outcomes, establish if poisoning could have been a causative factor in deaths; determine if there has been an unlawful administration of a substance by a third party, for example in suspicious deaths or cases involving drug-facilitated crimes such as rape/sexual assault or robbery; establish the presence of substances that may affect an individual’s behaviour or ability to make a rational or reasoned judgement, such as driving while under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol; and providing evidence in cases where parents may be denied access to their children on the basis of a history of drug/alcohol abuse, where continued abuse may endanger the welfare of the child.

Within the Toxicology Service, we provide:

  • Analysis of preserved blood specimens
  • Analysis of the proportion of alcohol (ethanol) and preservative (fluoride) in blood and urine specimens
  • Identification and quantification of a wide range of common drugs of abuse and certain medicinal drugs in body fluids
  • Expert interpretation of the significance of the presence (or absence) of any findings
  • Expert advice with alcohol technical calculations in standard toxicology and road traffic casework
  • Scientific, technical advice and forensic training
