Rapid DNA technology used to apprehend car thief
Key Forensic’s rapid DNA service was used recently by Staffordshire Police in the investigation of a burglary dwelling, on a residential cul-de-sac where the occupants were asleep upstairs while their property was being broken into.
The occupant confronted the offender who left the scene taking their VW golf from the driveway. Blood was found near an internal door handle and was processed urgently by KFS and a profile loaded to the NDNAD.
Staffordshire Police made KFS aware that the suspect had an SGM profile and they needed an urgent upgrade to confirm the match.
The sample arrived at KFS’s Warrington lab around 3pm. Acknowledging the custody time limit of 12 midday the next day, it was processed using our RapidHIT rapid DNA service and a statement was sent to Staffs police confirming the match by 10.20am, well within the PACE time limit.
The suspect fully admitted the offences and was charged.
