Investment in forensic technology helps combat crime and Police austerity measures
A recent article in The Independent focused on how forensic service providers use scientific and technological advances to tackle crime and to help Police forces maximise their forensic budgets during the current period of austerity across the Police Service.
Integrating cutting edge technology into criminal investigations is paying dividends in many cases, with the early identification or exoneration of suspects, whilst the PACE clock is running.
The Independent article states that in 2013 MP’s warned the forensic science industry that they may not be willing to invest further in a shrinking industry due to budget cuts and reduced spending on forensic services.
At KFS we have seen this period as a time to invest in developing forensic DNA technology to save valuable investigative time and improve cost effectiveness for our Police customers.
In March this year we became the world’s first forensic organisation to obtain ISO17025 accreditation for the revolutionary DNA profiling technology, RapidHIT® and have begun loading DNA profiles generated by the device to the National DNA Database® (NDNAD).
This means that KFS is now offering its police customers a same day DNA profiling service for the processing of mouth swab samples taken from arrestees.
KFS is the first forensic service provider in the world to offer this service routinely, enabling police forces to check an arrestee against the NDNAD on the day of the arrest, before the force is required under PACE to release them on bail (with the possibility that they may abscond or re-offend).
The RapidHIT® system, takes approximately two hours to produce a DNA profile, which is a radical reduction of the time taken using traditional DNA processing techniques in a laboratory environment.
Says KFS Group Managing Director Paul Hackett: “This new, same day DNA profiling service turns what was previously considered a premium or urgent service into the routine. KFS leads the way in rapid DNA profiling and now offers a same day service as standard. The era of waiting days for DNA results is over. While you wait DNA is here, right now and KFS is delivering this service as standard to all of its existing customers”.
At KFS, we are taking DNA testing the next level and embracing technology in order to improve the services we provide to our police customers which in turn, allows them to achieve much faster results and maximises their use of valuable forensic and investigative budgets.
