Instructing an Expert Witness

Don’t get caught out by instructing the wrong expert defence witness

Recent media coverage including BBC’s Panorama programme, has highlighted the potential pitfalls in instructing an expert witness to represent you or your business in court. We recommend you check the following points before appointing any expert:

• Are they accredited to ISO 17025 standards by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service?

• Are they a Home Office approved Forensic Provider currently providing services to the Criminal Justice System?

• Is the expert appropriately qualified & do they work as part of a team or organisation with a quality assured peer review system?

• Do they have their own laboratory facilities or do they rent laboratory space & equipment on a case by case basis from established Forensic Providers?
