One in 25 fathers are unwittingly raising children who are not theirs

This figure, estimated by the Daily Mail recently, demonstrates the need for reliable and accurate DNA Paternity testing when family relationships are being questioned. There have been two landmark cases which have hit the media headlines involving fathers, who after many years of believing their children to be theirs, have found out that they have been deceived by the mother and that the children have actually been fathered by other men.

The cases of Richard Rodwell and Andrew Philips highlighted the devastation that this type of paternity fraud can cause.

Andrew Philips’ solicitor Roger Terrell, who specialises in 'paternity fraud', says the number of such incidents is rapidly increasing.

In January 2013, in what was believed to be the first case of its kind, another of his clients, Richard Rodwell, received £25,000 in damages after discovering the son and daughter he had raised were not his.

Rodwell was a loving father to Adam and Laura until his marriage to their mother Helen broke down. After the divorce he paid regular child maintenance for more than four years, from his salary as a factory manager.

But in 2008 Mr Rodwell ordered DNA paternity tests after hearing rumours about his daughter’s paternity – and the results showed that each child was fathered by a different man. Following the DNA results, the children cut off all contact with him. He claims his ex-wife turned them against him.

Since then Mr Terrell has been contacted by dozens of other men who have been similarly deceived - it is estimated that one in 25 fathers are unwittingly raising children who are not theirs.

Speaking about this disturbing trend, Mr Terrell said ‘Fathers or children who are considering undertaking DNA Paternity tests should ensure that they use only bona fide DNA labs accredited by the Ministry of Justice and appearing on their list of approved suppliers. I have had experience of a court not accepting the DNA test results because the testing lab was not one on the MoJ list.’

Roger Terrell is a highly experienced Solicitor having qualified in 1980 having substantial knowledge and experience in Family Law, Civil Litigation and Personal Injury claims and Business Law generally. A member of the Law Society's Family Law Panel, Family Law Panel Advanced and Resolution.
